Your baby's first Christmas: four moments, four looks (and gifts that last)
From Christmas Eve dinner to the photo under the tree: what to dress them in for every moment of the festive season, without them getting too hot or too cold. And for grandparents, aunts and uncles, gift ideas that really get used.

What should your newborn wear for their first Christmas?
A newborn's Christmas is all warm houses, lots of arms, the odd trip out in the cold and naps wherever they happen. The right look is one that adapts to all of this in a couple of quick moves: that's why it makes sense to think in layers rather than about a single outfit.
Here's how it works: a cotton bodysuit next to the skin, the festive piece on top (a sleepsuit, a romper, a little dress), then a cardigan that comes off in a flash. For going out, add a little coat, a hat and warm socks. When you get back indoors, take off the hat and the extra layer straight away, even if they've just fallen asleep: the health service in England (NHS) advises this because overheating is a risk for babies. To check whether they're too warm, feel their chest or the back of their neck: slightly cool hands and feet are normal.
Here's how the look changes across the four moments of the festive season. Choose the one you need.

Christmas Eve: smart, but comfy for a long evening
A late dinner, relatives, maybe a nap in someone's arms. Choose a festive piece that's soft at the waist and easy to open for nappy changes: save the stiffer collar for the photo.
- At home
- Cotton bodysuit, festive piece and a cardigan to take off when the room warms up.
- Going out
- Coat or blanket, hat and socks. As soon as you arrive, off come the hat and the extra layer.

Wrapping paper, ribbons and lots of excitement: this is where your softest sleepsuit wins. If your family loves matching pyjamas, this is their moment: it's how the most natural photos happen.
- At home
- An all-in-one footed sleepsuit, or warm socks; a cardigan if the house is chilly in the morning.
- Going out
- If you're heading to the grandparents' afterwards, pack the festive outfit in your bag and change them there: it'll arrive crease-free.

This is the moment for the festive outfit, and it's also the longest: hours at the table, being passed from one pair of arms to the next, a feed somewhere in the middle. Choose soft fabrics and bring a complete change of clothes, because a bib is never enough.
- At home
- Festive outfit over the cotton bodysuit, with a cardigan that comes off in one go.
- Going out
- In the car, no padded coat under the harness straps: buckle them up and put the blanket on top.

For a photo you'll look back on for years, choose a colour that stands out against the green of the tree, like red or burgundy, and just one special detail: a collar, a bow, a touch of lace. Take the picture when they're fed and rested, near a window: daylight beats flash.
- Get ready
- The outfit ironed the day before and a light-coloured blanket to spread out as a backdrop.
- Skip
- The hat indoors: it's cute, but save it for when you go out.

Both, at different moments. Pyjamas that match mum, dad and siblings are perfect for opening presents and for photos at home, and your baby stays comfortable. The smart outfit comes into its own at lunch and in the photo under the tree.
The trick is the order: the most delicate piece goes on last, just before you head out or take the photo, and comes off first. When it's time for a nap, off come the festive outfit and the hat: for sleeping, their everyday sleepsuit is all they need, with no extra layers.
How should you dress them for the car journey to the grandparents'?
A padded coat is perfect for a walk, but it shouldn't go under the car seat harness. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) explains that in a crash, padded jackets and snowsuits compress and leave the harness straps too loose.
Here's a better way: thin layers on (bodysuit, sleepsuit, cardigan), harness buckled up and snug, then a blanket or the coat over the straps. A hat and socks don't get in the way of the harness, but the NHS advises taking off the hat and extra layers as soon as you get in the car: a blanket over the straps is enough to keep the cold out.
What should you give a newborn for Christmas?
If you're a grandmother, an uncle or a godparent, you're in good company: according to estimates by Codacons (an Italian consumer association), clothing and accessories were among the most-bought gifts at Christmas 2025, second only to children's toys. The best present, though, is one the parents will actually use. Three ideas that work:
- The outfit for their first Christmas. Give it a few days early: that way they'll wear it on the day itself, and your gift will be in the family photos too.
- A blanket or a muslin. They don't come in sizes and get used every day: in the pushchair, in your arms, on the play mat.
- A cardigan. The classic grandparents' gift: it goes over everything and sees them through the whole winter.

It happens, especially with babies who grow quickly. Exchanges and returns are free within 14 days of delivery, as long as the item is unworn, unwashed and still has its tag.
Many people shop well ahead: according to a DoveConviene survey, in 2025 more than 7 in 10 Italians planned to use Black Friday to get their Christmas shopping done early. If you're doing the same, ask the parents for the baby's current size straight away: that way, you can exchange it in time if you need to.
If you'd rather see and feel the clothes in person, you can try them on at the boutique and ask for advice; if you order online, you can also pick up there for free. Deliveries in Italy take 2–3 working days on average.
