Siblings in coordinated outfits for Christmas: how to match them without dressing them alike

Two or three colours, one detail that repeats and the softest piece for the youngest. The boutique's simple rules, three ready-made pairings with real pieces, and a few ideas for the photos and the long Christmas lunch.

In short To dress brothers and sisters in coordinated outfits without making them identical, choose a palette of 2–3 colours, repeat just one detail (tartan, velvet, a collar or a bow) and stick to fabrics from the same family, warm and soft. Give the youngest the comfiest piece, such as a sleepsuit or a romper. For the photo, go for daylight and a simple background; for the car journey, the coat goes over the car-seat harness, never under it.

How do you dress siblings in coordinated outfits without making them identical?

The loveliest effect is that of a family, not a uniform: anyone looking can tell straight away that they belong together, but each child still looks like themselves. Four rules are all you need.

  1. A palette of 2–3 colours. For example green and red, or burgundy and green with a neutral such as white or blue. Each child wears one or two of them, not all of them.
  2. One shared detail, and only one. Tartan, velvet, a light-coloured collar, a bow: repeated on both children, it ties the looks together even when the pieces are different.
  3. Fabrics from the same family. Velvet with velvet and chenille, warm knit with warm knit. A light, shiny fabric next to a chunky jumper looks as if it has wandered in from a different party.
  4. The softest piece for the youngest. The older one can wear a collared shirt or a dress with a pleated skirt; the little one wears the same colour in a sleepsuit or a romper, which goes on and comes off in no time.

Which details should brothers and sisters share?

Pick one row, in other words one detail, and adapt it for each of your children. The ideas all come from the Christmas pieces you'll find in the boutique.

How to match them
Shared detail For her For him For the youngest
Tartan A dress with a tartan collar or sash A plain cardigan in the green of her tartan A warm-knit romper with a tartan panel
Velvet The velvet dress with a pleated skirt A velvet suit A chenille sleepsuit in the same colour: it looks as soft as velvet but is more comfortable
Collar A blouse with a light-coloured collar A shirt with the collar peeking out of a cardigan Dungarees with a shirt
Bow A dress or romper with a big bow A bow tie Tights with a little velvet bow
A single colour The red dress The red jumper The red chenille sleepsuit

One row is enough. If you'd like to add a second detail, keep it small: tights or socks in the same colour.

Which pairings to choose for Christmas? Three ready-made ideas

Three outfits put together with pieces from the Christmas collection that are available as we write. The ages are based on the sizes in stock today: sizes change, so always check each item's product page.

Big sister and baby brother: warm knit and green tartan

Palettegreen and tartanSharedwarm knit and tartanAgesher from 6 months to 3 years, him from 3 to 18 months

The little dress and the romper are by the same brand, Sardon, and come from the same idea: warm knit and green tartan. She wears the dress, he wears the romper, which is more practical for crawling and for changes. The cable-knit cardigan, also in green, goes on top for going out and comes off indoors; it comes in sizes from 3 months to 3 years, so it works for both of them.

Brother and sister aged 4 to 8: burgundy and green

For older children, colour is the common thread: the burgundy Jason suit for him, the blouse with burgundy velvet details for her, to wear with a skirt or dark trousers you already have. The second colour in the palette is the green of her wool coat, by the same brand as the suit, Isabel. The suit comes in sizes 3 to 8 years, the blouse 18 months to 8 years, and the coat 4 to 8.

Sisters in the same dress in two colours, plus a newborn baby sister

The easiest way to look alike without being identical: the same Mayoral velvet dress with a pleated skirt, red for one sister and green for the other. If there's also a newborn in the family, the red chenille sleepsuit with raised flowers, by the same brand, echoes the red in the softest fabric of all.

What mistakes should you avoid when coordinating brothers and sisters?

  • Everything identical from head to toe. Two children of different ages in the same outfit look as if they're in uniform, and a style that suits a six-year-old is rarely the most comfortable at 10 months.
  • Two clashing patterns. A tartan next to a different check just blur together in photos. Better to put the pattern on one child and, on the other, a plain piece in one of its colours.
  • Too many colours. Beyond three, the eye loses the thread. White, cream and blue count as neutrals and give the look room to breathe.
  • Forgetting socks and shoes. Tights or socks in one of the palette colours finish the look; simple dark shoes go with everything.
  • Trying everything on on Christmas morning. Do a try-on as soon as the pieces arrive and leave the tags on until you're sure of the size: you can request a return within 14 days of delivery, as long as items are unworn, unwashed and still have their tags.

How do you get lovely family photos at Christmas?

Coordinated outfits look their best in photos, as long as the setting lets them shine.

  • Daylight. Near a window, during the day, with no flash: colours stay true and velvet shows off all its softness.
  • A simple background. A light wall, a curtain, the tree slightly blurred behind them. Against a busy, colourful background your palette gets lost.
  • Before lunch. The outfits are still neat and the children are better rested.
  • At their level. Crouch down, put them close together, ask them to hold hands or look at the tree together. Poses don't last long: shots of them on the move are often the best.

How do you keep them comfortable through the long Christmas lunch?

Christmas lunch goes on for hours, between the table, games and the odd nap. Thinking about comfort when you choose the outfits means fewer changes and happier children right through to the evening.

  • Thin layers rather than one heavy piece. In cold weather the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends dressing children in thin layers (AAP): a cardigan over the dress or shirt comes off when the house warms up, and the look stays intact.
  • For the youngest, take off extra layers indoors. The NHS advises removing hats and extra layers once you're indoors and choosing comfortable clothes that are easy to put on (NHS). That's another reason a sleepsuit or a romper is the most practical choice.
  • A bib and a change of clothes. From the first course to dessert, a bib protects the outfit for the photo; a spare change of clothes in your bag gives you peace of mind.
  • In the car, the coat goes over the harness. For the drive to the grandparents', no coats or padded jackets under the car-seat harness: the AAP advises strapping your child in wearing thin layers, doing the pinch test on the harness strap and putting the coat or a blanket over the harness (AAP).

General guidance, not medical advice: if you have any concerns about your child, ask your paediatrician.
