What should your baby wear under a christening outfit when it's cold?
The ceremony outfit is the layer everyone sees, but the warmth comes from what goes under and over it. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends dressing children in thin layers and points out that little ones need one more layer than an adult in the same conditions. For a christening, that means:
- Underneath: a long-sleeved cotton bodysuit, hidden under the dress or suit.
- Legs and feet: tights or socks, then the shoes.
- Over the outfit: a cardigan or shrug that opens at the front, easy to take off and put back on without undressing your baby.
- For going outside: a coat or a blanket, plus a hat.
The extra layer is measured against you: if you're comfortable in church in a shirt and jacket, your baby only needs a bodysuit, outfit and cardigan.
| Layer | What | Why | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Underneath | Long-sleeved cotton bodysuit | A thin first layer: keeps them warm without adding bulk under the outfit. | Bodysuits |
| Legs | Tights or socks | Keep legs covered even with a dress or dungarees; in the cold, the AAP recommends socks (AAP). | Socks and tights |
| The outfit | Dress, frock, suit or dungarees | The star of the day: in autumn and winter, many are in velvet or needlecord. | Christening and ceremony |
| On top | Cardigan or shrug | Comes off in seconds when you go into the church or restaurant. | KnitwearCardigans |
| Outside | Coat or blanket, hat | For outside the church and the journey. A hat when it's cold (AAP), off as soon as you're indoors (NHS). | CoatsBlanketsHats |
| On the feet | Shoes or booties | They finish the look, worn over tights or socks. | Shoes and booties |
A starting point, not medical advice: every child is different. If in doubt, ask your paediatrician.
Coat or blanket: what do you need outside the church?
Outside the church, between arriving, greeting everyone and taking photos, you'll need a layer for the outdoors. A coat is practical if you're holding your baby or if they're already walking: it fastens over the outfit and slips off as soon as you go in. A blanket works well for the littlest ones, in your arms or in the pram.
In the cold, the AAP also recommends a hat, mittens and socks, and taking off wet layers straight away, for example if you get caught in the rain (AAP).

Can your baby wear a coat in the car seat?
No: coats, jackets and padded clothing shouldn't go under the car seat harness. The AAP explains that in a crash the padding compresses and the straps end up loose. For the journey to the church and the restaurant, again according to the AAP:
- Take the coat off and fasten the harness over the outfit and cardigan, which are thin layers.
- Do the pinch test: if you can pinch the strap, tighten it a little more.
- Only then, put the blanket or the coat on back to front over the harness.
- As soon as you're in the car, take off the hat and any extra layers, even if your baby is asleep (NHS).
The Italian Ministry of Health (Ministero della Salute) reminds parents always to use an approved car seat suited to the child's weight and height, even for short journeys; in Italy, an anti-abandonment device is compulsory for children under 4.
What should you take off in church and at the restaurant?
The moment to watch is when you go inside: it's warmer indoors than out. The NHS advises taking off hats and extra layers as soon as you come in, even if your baby has fallen asleep, and choosing clothes that are comfortable and easy to put on (NHS Start for Life).
To check how they're doing, place your hand on their chest or the back of their neck: cool hands and feet are normal in newborns (NHS). Sweaty neck? Take off the cardigan.
Pick the moment
In church
As soon as you go in, take off the coat and hat and leave your baby in their bodysuit, outfit and cardigan or shrug.
Keep the shrug open at the front: if the church is chilly it stays on, if it's warm it slips off in seconds. And if you need one, bring the christening cloth.

At lunch
At the restaurant, take off the coat and hat as soon as you sit down, and check the back of their neck now and then: if it's sweaty, take off the cardigan too.
If it's a long lunch, a romper or dungarees with a little shirt still look smart while your baby plays or dozes off in someone's arms.

For photos
For photos outside the church, put the coat back on and, if it's cold, the hat; when you go back in, they come off again.
A pale wool coat goes with the outfit without overpowering it with colour, and a bow tie or pale shoes still show up when you're holding your baby.

Dress or suit: what's the difference for girls and boys?
For her, the classic choice is a ceremony dress, often in velvet or needlecord in the autumn-winter collection; there are also ceremony rompers and dungaree sets. Underneath go a bodysuit and tights, and on top a shrug or a short cardigan that lets the dress show.
For him, a ceremony suit, including three-piece styles, or dungarees with a little shirt, finished off with a bow tie. A long-sleeved bodysuit under the shirt, plus socks or tights. If you love tradition, the collection also includes ceremony gowns designed for boys.

If your baby isn't walking yet, pram shoes or knitted booties over tights or socks are all you need: they finish the look and keep little feet covered. If they're already taking their first steps, you'll also find first-walker shoes in the same collection.
